Backwards Compatible

Software that is "backwards compatible" works with older versions of the same software. For example, OpenOffice 2.0.1 is "backwards compatible" with OpenOffice 1.1.5, meaning that version 2.0.1 can open and edit all files that were made using version 1.1.5. Microsoft Office XP is "backwards compatible" with Microsoft Office 97.
