A collision domain, also called an Ethernet segment, is an area on a network where it is possible for network packets to collide. A collision occurs when two packets travel along the same network segment and collide, causing corruption of the data they contain.

The aim of network design is to keep the size of collision domains small as possible. This is achieved by using a switch, bridge or a router.
