Connecting to the net means either connecting to a local network that may be connected to the internet or it means connecting to the internet.

Connecting to the internet

You will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the internet. Once your PC successfully connects to the ISP's network, it can access the resources and services on the Internet.

To connect to a local network, find out your distribution and proceed accordingly.

SUSE Linux

Call

yast2 lan

and you will be presented with a self-explanatory screen to do your network settings. If you do not know better, choose dhcp as addressing method.

Ubuntu

To connect to a local network it is mostly enough to plug an ethernet cable into your computer and you can start. If that is not enough, ask the admin to set up dhcp or to tell you an IP address you can use.
