Connecting to the internet
You will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the internet. Once your PC successfully connects to the ISP's network, it can access the resources and services on the Internet.
You can access the ISP via
- phone line
- another communication line, e.g. for TV
- Set up NTL - NTL is a provider
- UMTS
Connecting to a local network
To connect to a local network, find out your distribution and proceed accordingly.
SUSE Linux
Call
yast2 lan
and you will be presented with a self-explanatory screen to do your network settings. If you do not know better, choose dhcp as addressing method.
Ubuntu
To connect to a local network it is mostly enough to plug an ethernet cable into your computer and you can start. If that is not enough, ask the admin to set up dhcp or to tell you an IP address you can use.
