From LQWiki
Egoboo is a reduction of "ego-boosting", the act of exerting energies and effort towards a particular goal or project in order to promote ones own standing in the community.
It has been cited (in Eric Raymond's "Cathedral and the Bazaar") as a possible reason for the participation of hackers on open source projects which otherwise appear to provide no tangible benefit (such as money or goods) to the individual.
Egoboo is also an OpenGL dungeon-exploring game, "..in the spirit of nethack" [from the egoboo website]
