FreeCiv is a free clone of Civilization. It currently has numerous users and is mostly multiplayer oriented. AI is slowly beginning to be implemented.

It is very easy to set up, and has a number of GUIs (from SDL to GTK)

In case you aren't familiar with Civilization, it is a turn based strategy game based around controlling a civilization from it's inception thousands of years ago, into the future. Games can get quite long and intricate, you manage cities, armies, diplomacy.

Most distributions have packages for freeciv.
