GIMP, an acronym for (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed software for tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

GIMP, being a versatile piece of software can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an image format converter, etc.

It is designed to be augmented with plugins and extensions to do just about anything and everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. There is an OS/2 port in development. There is also a native win32 port available at http://www.gimp.org/win32/. And some people have reported success in getting GIMP to run in MacOS X . Visit http://www.macgimp.org

The GIMP was written by Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball with many developers contributing plugins and thousands providing support and testing.

There is a development version of The GIMP available from ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.0/testing/ that includes many new features and bugfixes.
