HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, the language used for defining Web pages. It is effectively becoming a type of XML, although it predates the XML standard, being originally a subset of SGML. The W3C[1] is attempting to resolve the disparities between HTML and XML through XHTML, which is a version of HTML that fully conforms to the XML standard.
HTML and XHTML can also be used in conjunction with CSS.
HTML, XHTML and XML are all defined by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).
