Listen is a music player for the GNOME desktop environment, similar to AmaroK for its features. Listen is built with python, and despite this fact it is quite light weight, and follows somewhat the guidelines for a UI that Rhythmbox uses, int that its main view is divided into three main "panels". Its features include:

  • iPod management. Possible through the use of python bindings for libgpod.
  • PodCast management. This is actually a rather neat feature, as you only need to have the RSS feed for the podcast(s).
  • Wikipedia integration. Just like AmaroK, listen can fetch artist information from Wikipedia and display it while listening to a song.
  • Lyrics fetching. Again, this is a feature that many saw first appear on AmaroK, and it is also supported in Listen.
  • Last FM integration. One of the best implementations of Last FM integration has got to be this, as you get to see the ratings of related artists.
  • Last FM random play lists. This is a rather cool feature, as it allows to use Last FM ratings to set your play lists, should you have any of the related artists songs on your library, Listen will chose one of these at random.
  • Context panel. Similar to the statistics AmaroK displays.
  • Burn CDs. Listen can directly burn a play list to CD as an audio CD or as an mp3 disk.
  • Notification area icon. Just as it's been the trend lately, Listen also supports "closing to the notification area", leaving only its icon there when you close the window.

This program may be the answer for a "native" version of AmaroK for GNOME. Listen can't compare to AmaroK bis-a-bis, as both have features the other lacks, however this is a very welcomed application for the GNOME desktop environment.

Currently, though, Listen is only available for Ubuntu in binary form offered at their main Source Forge download section, however building the program from source should not be difficult if you have all the requird dependencies.
