MIT stands for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Tech Model Railroad Club (TMRC) at MIT was an early sorce of hacker lore, and many of its regulars latter joined MIT's AI LAB. MIT's AI Lab was one the earliest centers of hacker culture. (see History of Hacking.

MIT remains at the forefront of computing and open source in particular. The MIT license is an attribution-based license similar to the BSD license.
