There are numerous applications to suit your needs:
- Playing music files and streaming audio (such as web radio) is described in the section on music players.
- CD playing and ripping/encoding can be done easily with tools such as grip or cdparanoia. KDE users can rip and encode audio CDs from the file manager.
- You can find information on recording or editing audio files and on adding sound effects in Audio Editors.
- Playing audio/video files and DVD is covered in Video players.
If you are looking for other codecs or applications, try your distros package manager first, before hunting for software on the web. If you can find what you need in YaST, Mandrake Control Center or KPackage, it will make installation a breeze.
Searching by name on RPMFind will give you a clue which package name to look for on your system.
Some audio/video codecs:
- DivX: http://www.divx.com/divx/linux/
- FLAC: http://flac.sourceforge.net/
- Ogg: http://www.vorbis.com/
