PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) is an organisation that maintains and develops standards for plugin cards for mobile computers. There are many different types of cards, including network, modems, flashmemory and IDE devices.

In Linux these are supported by pcmcia-cs[1], which deals with loading and unloading the drivers when a card is plugged in or out. But it's slowly being replaced by hotplug, which can also handle PCMCIA devices.

Also stands for "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms".
