From LQWiki
PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) specifies a way for personal computers to interact with a broadband modem (xDSL, cable, wireless, etc) to achieve a connection to the Internet. PPPoE relies on two widely accepted standards, ethernet and the point-to-point protocol (PPP). PPPoE has the advantage of allowing the ISP to issue login/password pairs for authentication, but is a bit more annoying for the end-user than the DHCP method. Broadband ISPs who use the DHCP method usually lock an account down to the modem's MAC address.
