A Short Messaging Service offered by most mobile telephony providers, SMS allows short text messages to be sent from a mobile phone to another mobile handset. (Recently providers have been offering SMS text messages to other targets, including "landline" telephones.)

SMS is a generic term for mobile text messaging; it operates in different ways over different communications protocols such as GSM, GPRS, UMTS and various 3G services.
