SunOS is Sun Microsystems' proprietary Unix operating system that supports their Sparc hardware (though it is available for free for x86). The SunOS moniker only describes versions less than 2.6. Versions of SunOS greater than 2.7 are now known as Solaris, with SunOS 2.7 mapping to Solaris 7, and so on.
