Wait a tick: I thought the progression worked like this: machine language, assembler, HLL, interperted. I think Fortran is the first HLL, and C certainly falls into that category, IMHO. Python, Perl, Java, etc are usually interperted languages, although they can sometimes be used as HLL. Or am I just out of my gourd? Crazyeddie 13:46, Jan 20, 2005 (EST)
O, oops, i guess i got it wrong, ill change it later tonight .... guess i got confused with "high level" as "easyer to use for most people", thanks for the currection Crazyeddie -- SciYro
Old school basic is usually interperted, visual basic is HLL. Keep in mind I'm code illiterate, and old school basic is before my time. Basic definition of HLL is that it's written in "English" and is compilied into binary. Interperted is also written in "English" but stays in English or is compilied into bytecode. (Bytecode is kinda in between.) Crazyeddie 14:11, Jan 21, 2005 (EST)
so thats why i never heard the word "compile" on a Commadore 64 (as i recall it apeared to use basic), thanks for the full definition for high level languages -- SciYro
That's why BASIC was so popular. As an intepreted language, it served as a poor man's OS with shell, all while fitting on a ROM chip. Crazyeddie 16:38, Jan 21, 2005 (EST)
