TeX is a document processing software system created by Donald Knuth. It is available for GNU/Linux (and almost every other platform) and beautifully typesets text -- especially when that text contains mathematics. Most folks don't use TeX directly, but instead use a particular macro package that uses TeX, which is called LaTeX. LaTeX is typically installed on a GNU/Linux system in the form of the teTeX package.
