VESA is a group of standards for Monitors, Video cards so they can all work together.
Most video cards will be able to run with just the basic VESA driver, but the VESA standards just cover the basics, to enable any special features like 3D Graphics Acceleration, etc., you'll need a specific driver designed for that card.
