Acccording to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C):

"The World Wide Web is the universe of network-accessible information, an embodiment of human knowledge"

In less nebulous terms, the world wide web (or web) constitutes the resources on the Internet which are accessible through a web browser - in other words, those resources which are accessible through the HTTP protocol. The web is often confused with the Internet. However, the web is just one of many protocols that use the Internet to communicate. The use of hyperlinks link webpages into a web, hence the name.
