This wiki page describes the requirements for watching and recording TV under Linux, both PCIe and USB TV tuners are supported.

The Linux kernel provides the "Media Subsystem" to support the required drivers under Linux.

Requirements

  • A supported TV tuner (see the "Supported Hardware List" link in the "See Also" section below).
  • The Linux kernel that has been configured and built with the "Media Subsystem".
  • The relevant drivers/modules to interface with your TV tuner's chip that decodes the signal from your tuner's antenna.
  • An application that supports watching/recording TV (see the "Software" section below).

Notes

  • You should always check linuxtv.org before expecting your particular TV tuner to work.
  • The "Supported Hardware List" at linuxtv.org may not be up to date.
  • Some TV tuners require firmware to be installed that may not be included in your distributions kernel firmware package.
  • The Tevii s660 tuner is known to work, even on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.
