From LQWiki
Wavesurfer is a great tool for editing and visualization of audio. It is very useful for speech analysis, research, and annotation/transcription. The program uses the Snack library which is scriptable (TCL/TK and Python), and may be embeded in a browser using the TCL plug in.
Wavesurfer is simple enough that a 5th grader used it to generate speech spectrograms for his science fair project. He won first place.
Advantages: expandable, open source, under a BSD-style license, simple to use, supports speech spectograms and signal ayalysis.
Disadvantages: difficult to use for multi-track analysis and editing, written in TCL/TK.
