Great work on the formatting page! Extremely useful. Just an observation, though: could you save up your edits by editing the preview page repeatedly rather than saving the edits so often? That'll cut down on the logging of changes and make things easier to follow. I usually take at least two edits for everything I do, it seems, so I'm not one to talk, but it just seems like it would be good to keep the logged edits down.

Either way, that's some good stuff.

These days, "ethernet cable" usually refers to Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and one of cat5 (category 5), cat5e (category 5 enhanced) or cat6 (category 6).

As a rough guide, cat 5 is a medium for speeds up to 100Mbps, cat 5e is capable of speeds up to 1000Mbps. Cat5 and cat5e cables can be used for distances up to 100 meter without the use of [[repeater]]s. Cat6 is the new standard for ethernet cable used, which makes even faster network traffic possible.

All UTP network cables should run from a host to a [[hub]], or [[network_switch]], if you want more than two computers or devices on your network. Some routers incorporate a hub or switch.

I think the search button is broken.

Suppose I am searching for old conversations I have participated in. I type: "LionKimbro" into the Search box on the right.

I get back [http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/index.php?search=LionKimbro&fulltext=Search this page] which says, "Showing below 0 results starting with #1."

Okay, but "LQWiki talk" doesn't seem to have a check in it. It probably didn't check the talk pages.

So, I uncheck everything, check "LQWiki" and then "LQWiki talk", and type "LionKimbro" into the "Search For" box. Click "search."

I get back [http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Special:Search?ns4=1&ns5=1&search=LionKimbro&searchx=Search this,] which says at the top of the page: 'For query ""' - 'Badly formed search query.'

If this doesn't work, I think that the page here should just ''say'' it doesn't work. "Don't bother trying anything more complicated than a simple search; it's broken."

The FTP protocol does not interact very well with masquerading [[firewall]]s. It is easy to find yourself behind such a firewall without realizing it; if your IP starts with 192.168 or 10. then you certainly are. Commonly, you can log into the remote server fine but cannot download anything.

If you are the administrator for that firewall, you are best served by fixing the firewall. If this is the case, the firewall may be missing one or both of the ip_conntrack_ftp and ip_masq_ftp modules. Try doing a [[lsmod]] on the firewall machine and look for these modules. Got a new job this past weekend. Now I'm a production web administrator for a local university. It's J2EE in a UNIX (and open source) environment, so I'm completely psyched about the job (I've been trying for years to get into a UNIX shop). Not to mention the fact that universities generally don't talk about [[outsourcing]] like my current corporate employer does.

I'm not sure that this will be read, but I would like to become an administrator. I have been an administrator at [http://www.wikipedia.org Wikipedia] for three months, and a [http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ugen64 user] for more than six. Hi. I think that the idea of a linux knowledge base as a wiki is great! I'm a contributor of Wikipedia (en and fr) and and hope that this wiki will become as useful and interesting to browse.

My main problem with the LQ.wiki is its appearance; the fonts in the articles are too small, the headers are too big and look like links. I know that all this will be polished over time, but I think that ASAP would be a good idea to avoid turning away potential contributors. [[User:MikeCapone|MikeCapone]] March 06, 2004.
