Great work on the formatting page! Extremely useful. Just an observation, though: could you save up your edits by editing the preview page repeatedly rather than saving the edits so often? That'll cut down on the logging of changes and make things easier to follow. I usually take at least two edits for everything I do, it seems, so I'm not one to talk, but it just seems like it would be good to keep the logged edits down.
Skyline, you seem to be the goto guy for formatting and such. Any ideas on how to deal with directory paths? Crazyeddie 16:43, Jun 2, 2004 (EDT)
:Good question, I'll get back to you on this - btw, do we think the "descriptions" of the most "familiar" sub-directories will be sufficiently in-depth to merit separate pages? or alternately, if they're going to be a little more brief, possibly include them via ==headers== under the corresponding high-level directory article. -- Skyline 22:34, Jun 2, 2004 (EDT)
:Our existing search page (created on March 6th) already talks about "How to search using Go or Find" and "Google".....we don't need this duplicated on another "search" page - further - any links on this Wiki that need to refer users to the topic of "How to search this wiki" etc, etc, will be made to the existing search page - that's what it's there for.... - Skyline 19:43, Jun 3, 2004 (EDT)

There are a number of different types of ethernet cable, as ethernet has been around for a long time.

These days, "ethernet cable" usually refers to Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and one of cat5 (category 5), cat5e (category 5 enhanced) or cat6 (category 6).

As a rough guide, cat 5 is a medium for speeds up to 100Mbps, cat 5e is capable of speeds up to 1000Mbps. Cat5 and cat5e cables can be used for distances up to 100 meter without the use of repeaters. Cat6 is the new standard for ethernet cable used, which makes even faster network traffic possible.

All UTP network cables should run from a host to a hub, or network_switch, if you want more than two computers or devices on your network. Some routers incorporate a hub or switch.

If you only want two devices, it is possible to connect them directly by using a crossover cable. This is a normal UTP cable that has the send and receive wires crossed over at each end.

Older networks may use coaxial cable, which is like TV aerial wire, and has a Bayonet Nut Connector (BNC) on the end. The coaxial cables used for ethernet come in two flavors.
*thinnet (10Base-2), Speed: 10Mbps Range: 185m
*thicknet (10Base-5), Speed: 10Mbps Range: 500m
Coaxial networks need a resistor, called terminator, in both ends of the cable in order to work. Without terminator the signal bounces back and forth in the cable and mess up the communication.

Vorbis is an open-source, patent-free audio compression specification created by the Xiph.org Foundation. It is part of Xiph's Ogg project to create a complete open-source multimedia format.

Vorbis is a compression method, not a file format. Vorbis streams must be encapsulated in a bitstream which provides framing and seeking capabilities. By far the most common bitstream is Ogg; however, in principle any encapsulation could be used. For example, it is possible to embed Vorbis streams in AVI files.

Ogg Vorbis files usually have the extension .ogg. They are supported by many media players, including XMMS and Winamp.

David ross: removed spam

A PDA (Personal Data Assistant) is a small, light hand-held computer used as personal organiser. All have inbuilt screens, processors and memory. Some have small keyboards, while others use a combination of stylus and touchscreen to get user input.

PDAs are increasingly threatened in the marketplace by SmartPhones, which often have similar processing and memory capabilities but offer always-on connectivity. To combat this, PDAs tend to use WiFi and Bluetooth technology for obtaining remote data. Don't be surprised if these two camps converge into one over the next two years. There is some effort toward this already, but since PDAs are usually bulkier than cellphones, there is a problem with "holding a bar of soap against my ear" syndrome.

Many manufacturers make PDAs, the pioneers being Palm and Nokia. Samsung, Hitachi, RIM and Handspring, among others, have joined the market in the last few years. More will come as PDAs gradually achieve capabilities that will be comparable to the best desktop computers of only a few years ago.

Linux compatible PDAs
Most PDA manufacturers do not consider Linux compatibility a high priority. Yet. However, Sharp's Zaurus range runs on Linux. There is a large amount of Linux-compatible software for Palm OS users, mostly because Palm has been in this game long enough for developers to write for it.

Linux runs on many HPs, too. There are two major branches of software for PDAs - Opie (based on Qtopia, based on QT-embedded) and GPE (based on GTK+, running X).

It is possible to install a version of Linux on WindowsCE based PDAs (presumably the distros listed above). However, this will almost certainly void your warranty.

For those not so foolhardy, probably the best bet is to use a version of either SSH or VNC on the handheld and log into the Linux systems remotely.

Synchronisation
To communicate and synchronize data between a PDA and Linux you can use one of these software packages (depeding on the type of PDA):
*pilot-link -- For Palm/PalmOS based PDAs
*synce -- For WindowsCE based PDAs
*For PDAs with a Linux based OS it's often possible to use common tools like SSH and FTP

A metacharacter, in the shell, is a character that usually has some other meaning or is used to signify something other than that character itself. For example, the wildcard * is often a shell metacharacter, and a
* is often replaced with (often said to be expanded to or substituted with) a list of all the files in the current directory.

Quoting (or escaping) is done in order to suppress the behaviour of metacharacters. This may be necessary in case you have a filename called a*work or the like, and you do not want the asterisk to be expanded at the command line. Escaping is done with any of the following methods:
* 'single quotes' (which suppresses all shell substitutions)
* "double quotes" (which suppresses most substitutions)
* \backslashes (which escapes single characters)

Example
$ echo ~
/home/username

Here the tilde is expanded to the user's home directory.

David ross:

This file is used to tell the kernel what drives (technically filesystems) to mount and where. Located at /etc/fstab its format is:

[Device] [Mount Point] [Filesystem] [Options] [dump] [fsck order]

Device
This is the physical location of the file system, e.g
*/dev/hda - The master drive connected to the primary IDE cable.
*/dev/hda2 - The second partition on master drive on primary IDE.
*/dev/hdb - second drive on primary IDE cable.
*/dev/fd0 - First floppy drive

It can also be a file system volume label or UUID, using this has the advantage that adding/removing disks won't effect what gets mounted. The format to use instead of the device name in the fstab file is:
LABEL=
(Where is some name, e.g. Boot)
UUID=<uuid>
(Where <uuid> is some number like 3e6be9de‐8139‐11d1‐9106‐a43f08d823a6)

How the label and the UUID are set depends on the file system type used. It can normally be set when creating/formatting the file system and the file system type usually has some tool to change it later on (e.g. e2tunefs,xfs_admin,reiserfstune,etc.)

Mount Point
What folder the filesystem is to be available under from system root, e.g.
*/mnt/floppy
*/mnt/cdrom
Note: Make sure folder exists

Filesystem
This specifies what filesystem the device uses. A list of common filesystems located here. Typically you will be mounting iso9660 for CDs and ext2/ext3/ReiserFS fro hard drives/floppies.

Options
This field describes how kernel should handle filesystem, i.e. will it be writable by the user.

*sync/async - All I/O to the file system should be done (a)synchronously.
*auto - The filesystem can be mounted automatically (at bootup, or when mount is passed the -a option). This is really unnecessary as this is the default action of mount -a anyway.
*noauto - The filesystem will NOT be automatically mounted at startup, or when mount passed -a. You must explicitly mount the filesystem.
*dev/nodev - Permit any user to mount the filesystem. This automatically implies noexec
*exec / noexec - Permit/Prevent the execution of binaries from the filesystem.
*suid/nosuid - Permit/Block the operation of suid, and sgid bits.
*ro - Mount read-only.
*rw - Mount read-write.
*user - Permit any user to mount the filesystem. This automatically implies noexec, nosuid, nodev unless overridden.
*nouser - Only permit root to mount the filesystem. This is also a default setting.
*defaults - Use default settings. Equivalent to rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser, async.

Other
Dump field sets whether the backup utility dump will backup filesystem. If set to "0" filesystem ignored, "1" filesystem is backed up.

Fsck order is to tell fsck what order to check the filesystems, if set to "0" filesystem is ignored.

A Typical /etc/fstab File

/dev/hda2 / ext2 defaults 1 1 - mounts 2nd partition of first drive
/dev/fd0	/mnt/floppy ext2 noauto,user 0 0	- mounts floppy when asked (not at boot)
/dev/hdb1	none ignore defaults 0 0	- ignores second drive
/dev/hda3	none swap sw -mounts 3rd partition on 1st drive for swap .

Auto-mount of iso-image in /etc/fstab
/iso-archiv/image.iso /mnt/image1 iso9660 ro,loop,auto 0 0
FTP is the File Transfer Protocol. Part of the TCP/IP suite of protocols.

What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is one of the most venerable protocols on the Internet, on par with Telnet. As the name suggests, it is used to transfer files between computers. FTP clients for Linux include ncftp and the original
ftp
command-line program. Other programs such as Nautilus and gnome-vfs support FTP transactions.

FTP servers listen on TCP port 21. Other ports are used in FTP transactions as well, making it somewhat difficult to easily control via a firewall.

Be aware that ftp passwords are sent unencrypted, and are therefore relatively easy to snoop. If security is an issue use sftp instead.

Perhaps the easiest way to start managing remote ftp resources is through your file manager, because it presents the same interface as you use for local files. An ftp URL takes the form ftp://username:password@server and can be typed into the address field of some file managers.

Files on an ftp server may be used directly by any program if mounted using ftpfs.

FTP Servers
*ProFtpd
*Vsftpd
*Ws-ftpd

FTP Clients
*NCFTP
Common Problems
Firewalls
The FTP protocol does not interact very well with masquerading firewalls. It is easy to find yourself behind such a firewall without realizing it; if your IP starts with 192.168 or 10. then you certainly are. Commonly, you can log into the remote server fine but cannot download anything.

If you are the administrator for that firewall, you are best served by fixing the firewall. If this is the case, the firewall may be missing one or both of the ip_conntrack_ftp and ip_masq_ftp modules. Try doing a lsmod on the firewall machine and look for these modules. If not, try loading them with modprobe --- e.g. simply modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp ip_masq_ftp will do. If this doesn't work, you will have to check your kernel options.

If you cannot do the above then a local workaround exists, called passive ftp. How this is invoked depends on the program used. E.g. wget can be put into this mode by using wget --passive-ftp.
While there is often nitpicking about, or ignorance of, (depending on your point of view) the differences between emulators and virtual machines, in essence, you start an application that allows you to start non-native applications 'in' it.

These basically lie to the applications and pretend to be that application's native operating system, trapping and translating requests from that program to the kernel and feeding back responses that make the application 'think' that is running on DOS or Windows or OS/2 or any number of other systems. Hi. I think that the idea of a linux knowledge base as a wiki is great! I'm a contributor of Wikipedia (en and fr) and and hope that this wiki will become as useful and interesting to browse.

My main problem with the LQ.wiki is its appearance; the fonts in the articles are too small, the headers are too big and look like links. I know that all this will be polished over time, but I think that ASAP would be a good idea to avoid turning away potential contributors. MikeCapone March 06, 2004.
