=Introduction=
Swift is a text-to-speech engine made by [http://www.cepstral.com Cepstral] allowing the user to convert text to computer generated speech. For general use, Swift's functions are comparable to that of [[Festival]] and other free solutions, allowing one to easily convert text to speech, and the ability to save that speech as an audio file (e.g. .wav).

One might find that the most notable pro to using this commercial product, compared to a free solution, is the quality of the voices available. (use the external links below to compare two systems). [http://cepstral.com Cepstral] offers 8KHz and 16KHz voices at a reasonable cost (when compared with other non-free solutions) and are compatible with the [[Festival]] project (see the [[Festival]] script on the [http://www.cepstral.com/support Cepstral Support Pages.]

One can download and test voices without cost, however there is a Cepstral demo notice at the beginning of each sentence.

=How to install=
Cepstral is not available readily from package repositories. You need to download it and install it via http://www.cepstral.com.
* Go to http://www.cepstral.com/downloads/.
* Pick a voice that you like, or go to http://www.cepstral.com/demos to try them first.
* Once you've downloaded the package, extract it (See [[tar]])
gunzip filename.tar.gz && tar xf filename.tar
* or, in most distribution's you can right click the file and 'extract to folder'
* Go to the new folder and run:
./install.sh
* Follow the prompts

=How to register a voice=
* Go to http://www.cepstral.com/store and purchase a licence key.
* Download and decompress the voice file:
swift --reg-voice
* Follow the instructions and enter your name and product key as indicated on the invoice.

=How to use Cepstral=
Once installed, you can use swift similarly to [[Festival]]:
$ swift "Hello, this is a test."
The following uses the Allison voice, to convert a raw text file to a wave file, not unlike [[Festival]] [[text2wave]]:
$ swift -n Allison -m text -f /path/to/file.txt -o file.wav

When I contribute am I the author under the creative commons license?
Who owns the copyright?
Who is issuing the license?
When I contribute to wikipedia I give ownership to them and they issue the license.
The license says to give credit to the author but this can be difficult with a wiki. Maybe you should state that all contributions are considered "work for hire" and therefore linuxquestions.org is the author.
Maybe you should use the license that wikipedia uses.

When you contribute, you are the author and the holder of the copyright. You are licensing your work to us under the terms of the Creative Commons license (the attribution-sharealike varient or by-sa for short). You hold the copyright to the material you contribute (but not the article as a whole if you're editing an existing article) so you can do anything you like with it. A "work for hire" clause might have been considered, but might have interfered with reuse of Creative Commons material (not that there are a lot of Creative Commons material yet to reuse) and discouraged people from contributing. There are reasons that we don't use the [[GFDL]] (the [[copyleft]] licensing that Wikipedia uses), and the main reason that the Wikipedia doesn't use Creative Commons is simply that it hadn't come out yet. (Under the GFDL, reusing a 1-2 page article could mean attaching 12 pages of legalese, with Creative Commons, all you have to do is say who you got it from and that you are releasing it under Creative Commons (by-sa).)
