Orkie: Added in what static linking is and its advantages/disadvantages

Static linking is when you link in parts of a static library when generating an object file or executable output. It differs from dynamic linking in that it includes the entire library being linked in the executable rather than just allowing the library to be linked automatically whenever the executable is run.
The main advantage of static linking over dynamic linking is that since the library is included directly within the executable itself, the computer running the executable doesn't need to have the library installed which can help to reduce dependency hell. However, this ease of use comes at a cost. Firstly, the executable takes up more (often a lot more) space both on the hard drive and in RAM. The program also uses more RAM than a normal one would as the kernel won't allow other processes to share code already loaded into memory. Under a dynamic linking scheme, if two programs are run which both use the same library, the kernel can, to some extent, allow both processes to access the same copy of the library (so rather than loading a copy of the library for each process, it simply loads one and lets both of them access it). This isn't possible with a statically linked binary (executable) however, since the library is part of the program being run.

gcc
With gcc, libraries are linked with "-l". (Note that the library could be either dynamic, or static.) A static library specified with "-lfoo" will be looked up as "libfoo.a".

The library is searched for in standard directories, plus whatever you specify with "-L". The standard directories are:
* /usr/local/lib
* /usr/lib

The order that -l's appear in matters; Symbols are only pulled from -l's that have been requested by an object file before the -l appeared.

example: If foo.o has a symbol that is defined in libbar.a, then:
g++ foo.o -lbar # this works
g++ -lbar foo.o # this doesn't work

In the one that doesn't work, nothing is pulled from bar, because no symbols have been requested that are found in it, yet.
Will this be done in American English or British English? I am willing to do some transcripts but somebody may need to quickly read over them and look for any obviously non-American things if we do it in that since our Englishes are actually quite different :) Oh, and if translations do go ahead, I can check for inappropriate content in both French and Spanish.
:Since LQ is in the US, I'd say mostly American English should be used, but do keep in mind that we are working on having UK episodes also. Jeremy 10:57, Sep 9, 2005 (EDT)
Well, personally I will be spelling in aussie english (coloUr etc) but of course, if any 'americanisms' are used by jeremy and his team- then we'll chuck em in and not translate them to another flavour of english. I will also **** swear words.
Orkie 11:46, Sep 7, 2005 (EDT)

That is fine then, I will just write in British English and if somebody wants to americanise it then they can run it through a US English spellchecker. Now onto how the transcripts will be divided up. How long do you think would be best for each person to do? I can't take on more than 10 minutes at a time at the moment due to school (yes, I am the very much younger generation that people are so often talking about in the forums :)).
:I wouldn't really give a guideline. Rip off a piece you think you can chew and then post what you'll be doing - so there is no duplication of effort. Everyone can then take an amount they are comfortable with (which for some might be 5 minutes and for others 30). Jeremy 14:53, Sep 9, 2005 (EDT)
Just a general notice that I've started doing some work on this but I won't be able to do the entire thing on my own - it took me an hour to do the first 6 minutes of a Podcast yesterday. Imagine how long it would take to do an entire 1 hour+ radio show!
RHEL realses are provided aproximately every 18 mounths and supported by Red Hat and its parteners for seven years.

The RHEL family is comprised of four products, two designed for server sytems and two designed for client systems :

* Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (“Advanced Server”) is designed for large departmental and datacenter server deployments, best suited for systems with more than 2 CPUs or more than 16 GB of main memory.

* Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (“Entry/mid Server”) provides an entrylevel
and midrange server operating system for the Intel x86, EM64T, Itanium2, and AMD64 markets. It's differentiated from Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS by its support for smaller systems and lower price.

* Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (“WorkStation”) is ideal for “power
user”, software development, and technical applications such as
virtualization/rendering. It includes a full suite of
desktop productivity applications for tasks such as document creation, email,
instant messaging, and web browsing.

* Red Hat Desktop
Red Hat Desktop supports 32bit Intel x86 and 64bit Intel EM64T and AMD64 systems with one CPU and up to 4 GB of main memory. It provides the same software functionality as Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS but for smaller systems and at a lower price point.

Orkie: Added lots of information

The FAT16 file system was used in the days of DOS. FAT is an acronym for File Allocation Table. It is a 16 bit file system with a 2 gigabyte limit on the size of a partition. It stores all filenames in the 8.3 format (meaning that a file could have an 8 character long name as well as a 3 character long extension to declare its type).

The FAT16 was succeeded by VFAT in Windows 95 (which was the same but stored two copies of a name to allow filenames up to 255 characters long) which was in turn obsoleted by the FAT32 file system that allowed 32 bit transactions in addition to the improvements from VFAT.

Pros and Cons
FAT16 is a useful file system for use on floppy disks as it is very efficient with regards to size since its structures are very small (as are most FAT file systems). However, it isn't the best of file systems to use if you have enough space avalible for the larger structures of other file systems due to both the aforementioned 2 gigabyte partition limit and 8.3 filenames but also, FAT stores data wherever there is the space for it, causing fragmentation and slowdown (which can be repaired with a defragmenter). Most modern file systems don't suffer from these problems or do so to a lesser degree.

Linux Support
The Linux kernel has has fully functional, safe read-write support for the FAT16 file system.
Other types of floppy drives can be LS120 drives, and possibly (but less likely to be considered a floppy) Zip drives. Floppy drives are just short of obsolescence - floppies are used just enough to justify the presence of a floppy drive on a computer.
