Hi folks,
in former times I was a LinuxNewbie and perhaps will always be.
I found a lot of help on wikies and forums espescially on LinuxQuestions.org.
Now I will give a bit of my "software" (braint --> knowledge) back to the community.

Wiki means fast but I am german, so fast writing means german writing for me.
Obvious I can write english also, but it is less fast...
So if you found something interesting you do not understand, ask me and I will translate it for you.

Hello. Curious to know why you haven't tried Gentoo. Coming from slack, and showing interest in LFS, you may find Gentoo a decent middle ground between the two. I think it's a great distro...if you don't mind the long install. And their forums are one of the better forums out there. Anyway...back to the wiki.

I've heard of it, but haven't [had a chance|taken the time] to look at it. Slack just happend to be the first distro I was introduced to, and I found the lack of a package manager to be limiting. I'm working on LFS more for education purposes than anything else. As for other distros, I liked Mandrake 9.1 a lot, but I've heard bad things from a friend of mine about 9.2. After a bad week of cleaning malware off windows boxes, I decided to take an amble down the path of righteousness, and installed Debian. Like I said in the main page, Debian did somethings in the startup files that I didn't particullarly like. The default settings were perfectly alright, but I wanted it to do it my way. After some fumbling around I realized that I needed to know more about the inner workings of Linux, hence the LFS.

Howdy! I appreciate your contributions to the wiki!

Is there a different wiki we can put the hacker's jargon dictionary onto?

I feel like it's enough OffTopic that it shouldn't be here. I believe that there should be a wiki for it, or to complement the authoritative version, but I don't think it should be here.

AFAIK, no. I originally planned to trim it down to just what I thought was on topic, but then I noticed a handful of LQwiki articles written on topics I had discarded. I'll lay off it for a while. A little bit of OTness doesn't hurt, just so long as it doesn't overwhelm the rest of the wiki. But it ''is'' getting close to that point. (One of the reasons I'm doing the [[Linux Documentation Project]] incorporation is to balance out all the OTness I'm inflicting on this wiki.) Dang thing is addictive though. If you find a particular article ''really'' offtopic, I'd guess you could nominate it for deletion... just as soon as we figure out a way to do that :-/[[User:Crazyeddie|Crazyeddie]] 18:34, Aug 4, 2004 (EDT)

You might want to read some of the ideas we've had over on [http://communitywiki.org/ CommunityWiki] about how to work [http://communitywiki.org/ThePublicWeb the public web.]

I think that with time, there will be a "proper place" for just about everything. (See [http://communitywiki.org/TooFewWiki TooFewWiki] and [http://communitywiki.org/WikiProliferation WikiProliferation.])

Well, I think hacker folklore has a place on this wiki, since programming, Linux, and hacking is interleaved. But this wiki shouldn't be ''only'' about hacker folklore. I do plan on eventually incorporating the entire File here, but we need to focus on our main mission first.

Wikis are great, because it allows users to contribute back to the community without much more knowledge than how to work a web browser in the first place. The main thing holding them back, as far as I can tell, is the lack of PHP coders to maintain the back end. (Plus people willing to pay for the hardware and bandwidth...)

I'm not so sure encouraging more NameSpaces is a good idea. I think they are good for keeping "administrative" areas of wikis seperate from the actual content, but any direct organization of wikis should be kept to a bare minimum. My experience with the [[Hardware Compatability List]] suggests that organizational schemes are the product of one or a few minds. Wikis naturally grow more organically, and one of the great things about wikis is the ability to random walk using the links (or, sometimes, the random page feature). Categories and other hierarchial organizational schemes are just too much work.

Hi Dan, thanks for your advice on [[User talk:Sdrubble]] on Oct. 1. Got it only right now, and will do my best to keep it in mind from now on.

To be honest I feel sad about this kind of stuff. I don't personally believe on intellectual property [that's a spiritual discussion which does not belong here]; moreover, I was born and raised in a country where copyright laws do exist but are not taken seriously by common folks. A large corporation usually enforces this kind of stuff internally, but average Joes do not think twice before going to the copy shop next door (one or two on every block, believe me) and cloning a whole book or paying US$3 for a CD with Win XP for their home computer.

So in this particular Wiki case (where I can see that this kind of concern is taken VERY seriously) the effect it will have on me is that I won't feel as compelled as I was before to research bits of info and make it available here. I will certainly NOT spend my time emailing webmasters and requesting permissions to spread info that they themselves obviously want to spread.

However I also accept that the law is the law and should [... not 'MUST' ...] be followed, no matter what silly consequences might arise from that. So I'll keep my rebel lines of thought to myself and not materialize those onto unlawful actions (not on LQ, at least).

As a side note I personally believe that an approaching social evolution [you might read 'spiritual' instead of social, and 'revolution' instead of evolution] will soon turn all copyright, patent, intellectual property and similar concepts into curiosities from the past. Time should tell.

Keep your advice coming. It will be welcomed by the brain even when rejected by the heart.

We (the moderator council) haven't been able to tell what license they are using, so we can't tell if it is safe to use their material here or not. Could some native German speaker approach their leadership and ask? From a quick look around, it looks like they have less material than we do, but they might have something we missed. And they might like to use our material, licenses allowing.

Thanks Phobie. Unfortunately, GFDL was exactly what I was hoping ''not'' to hear. We use Creative Commons (by-sa), and GFDL and CC ''fight''. Do they use GFDL so they can use other people's documents, or so other people can use theirs? If the latter, would they be interested in migrating? Who owns the copyright to their material? The contributors, or the site itself? If it's the site itself, they could unilaterally give us permission to use their material, regardless of license (unless they incorporated it from somebody else's work).

They do not care much about the license name and would also accept CC if that is a "realy free" license.
The german law divides copyright in two parts. If you produce something you will always be the "producer" of the content you can only sell or give away the right to make money with your content. That is a little hard to translate... 
This means the contributors are always the owner of the content, but allow everybody to frely use there "product". 
For migration interests you should write to <info AT linuxwiki DOT de>
Also start a open discussion on linuxwiki all will understand your english!

==Discussion: The Screensavers Premier==
Just caught the Screensavers Premier. I think the new co-host, Alex, might work out - he's kinda like a young Leo. (Although I did have a bad moment when I first saw him - I was afraid they had brought him over from G4!) But I think they need a more serious guy to replace Pat. Pat's served as an "anchor" for the team, getting the show back on track when things got too weird and providing serious advice. They need at least one guy to hold things together.

They also need more women, for balance, besides the obvious reasons. Sarah's good, but she's taken! By a guy on the show! They traded off Jessica and Morgan to prop up other show's ratings (worked in Morgan's case, but I ''still'' don't watch Tech Live. Could we please bring back Jessica? Or more guest appearances by Morgan or Megan?) Ideally, they could combine this with the Pat replacement. Any acting experience Dys?

I've also thought for a long time that it would be nice to have a lawyer-type on as a permanent cast member, or at least as a recurring guest. There is a lot of law-related topics in computers these days, and it might be fun to have a picture-in-a-picture reaction shot during Kevin's segments. How busy is PJ over at Groklaw these days?

New set's going to take some getting used to - everything is backwards, and I think I see the G4 influence in the set design. The old set had more of a "firehouse" look to it.

The german law divides copyright in two parts. If you produce something you will always be the "producer" of the content you can only sell or give away the right to make money with your content. That is a little hard to translate...
This means the contributors are always the owner of the content, but allow everybody to frely use there "product".

==Discussion: The Screensavers Premier==
Just caught the Screensavers Premier. I think the new co-host, Alex, might work out - he's kinda like a young Leo. (Although I did have a bad moment when I first saw him - I was afraid they had brought him over from G4!) But I think they need a more serious guy to replace Pat. Pat's served as an "anchor" for the team, getting the show back on track when things got too weird and providing serious advice. They need at least one guy to hold things together.

They also need more women, for balance, besides the obvious reasons. Sarah's good, but she's taken! By a guy on the show! They traded off Jessica and Morgan to prop up other show's ratings (worked in Morgan's case, but I ''still'' don't watch Tech Live. Could we please bring back Jessica? Or more guest appearances by Morgan or Megan?) Ideally, they could combine this with the Pat replacement. Any acting experience Dys?

I've also thought for a long time that it would be nice to have a lawyer-type on as a permanent cast member, or at least as a recurring guest. There is a lot of law-related topics in computers these days, and it might be fun to have a picture-in-a-picture reaction shot during Kevin's segments. How busy is PJ over at Groklaw these days?

New set's going to take some getting used to - everything is backwards, and I think I see the G4 influence in the set design. The old set had more of a "firehouse" look to it.

The first one I got, gots a Pixelerror (bright white/green) after 6 hours of usage. Luckly my reseller changed it, Acer itself is not so nice...

The secound survives longer, it died after 8 hours or so. Black screen and no booting only some blinking leds left.

Hi folks,
in former times I was a LinuxNewbie and perhaps will always be.
I found a lot of help on wikies and forums espescially on LinuxQuestions.org.
Now I will give a bit of my "software" (braint --> knowledge) back to the community.

Wiki means fast but I am german, so fast writing means german writing for me.
Obvious I can write english also, but it is less fast...
So if you found something interesting you do not understand, ask me and I will translate it for you.

Ok, for now I have moved them to my namespace [[User:Phobie]] and will do normal posts in english. Providing multible languages could be hard, as all posts have to be translated. linuxwiki.org does the work for german users and we do not need this here. Zugegeben, diese erfahrungen sind schon ein wenig älter, vieleicht hat sich ja was gebessert.
Das etwas eigenwillige toll YAST welches bei suse so ziehmlich alles konfiguriert ist nicht jedermans sache, meines auch nicht.

'''Mandrake''' eine im vergleich zu den vorigen beiden angenehm aufgefallene große mainstream distibution. Vieles ist aus usersicht besser durchdacht und intuitiver zu handhaben. Auch in der deutschen übersetzung bleibt einfach ein stück frankreich zurück...

'''Debian''' mein zuhause. Nicht für anfänger zu empfehlen. Die installation und konfiguration sind kein zuckerschlecken. Ich habe es damals irgendwann mal installiert um mehr von GNU/Linux zu lernen und weil wir es bei meinem hiwi job einsetzen. Das ".deb" packetsystem scheint mit den ".rpm" und ".gz.tar" system überlegen zu sein. Deshalb empfehle ich allen neulingen debian abkömmlinge wie Xandros oder Knoppix.

'''Gentoo''' die am meisten überschätzte distribution. Ob es nun schneller ist oder ob die benutzer die größeren geschlechtsteile haben interessiert mich reichlich wenig. Ich habe es einmal installiert. Es ist eine source distri, d.h. man kompiliert jeden scheiß selber. Selber kompilieren bringt aber bei 95% der packete rein gar nichts. Bei den restlichen kann man Prozessorspezifische erweiterungen nutzen. Sowas kann man aber anderswo auch vorkompiliert bekommen. z.B. "apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-k7" für den AthlonXP angepassten kernel unter debian bassierenden distries.
Es ist also die richtige distribution für jungen zwischen 14 und 20 die mit ihren "fähigkeiten" angeben müssen. Das man Gentoo besser als andere distries sinnvoll einsetzen kann, konnte mir bis heute noch keiner glaubhaft begründen.
