Citation Management software fills two primary roles:

  • Storing citation entries in a manageable format
  • Allowing easy previewing and editing of these files

In addition, some software allows:

  • Searching online databases for citations from within the program
  • Direct insertion of a citation into word processing software

On Macs and PCs, Endnote is often used. See Endnote under Other Linux Software for Linux citation manager applications.
