The first to be taken care of after an operating system's installation is its configuration. This means setting up the basic options which control the way the system works. When a machine is purchased with the operating system pre-installed, basic configuration has also been done, but you might want to do some configuration yourself in order to make the machine run the way you want it to.
Further, many applications and utilities may also need specific configuration.
The major categories of system configuration, which are described on separate pages, are:
- Security - Email, network, servers, physical security, auditing, policies
- Performance - Response time, throughput, efficient use of resources
- Program management - Packages, RPMs, repositories, Up2date, Synaptic
- Networking - LAN, Web, modem, broadband, email, browser
- Hardware configuration - hard drives, keyboard, display, peripherals
The major tools and information sources for doing system and application configuration are:
- General
- A text editor to edit configuration files in /etc and elsewhere
- Finding configuration parameters
A list of configuration ideas is also available.
