A device generally refers to a hardware component that is part of a computer system. For example, your mouse and keyboard could be considered a device (these are often termed peripherals). Your hard disk is often termed a device as well.

In Unix and Unix-like operating systems, devices are assigned a special file, and are listed under /dev.
