A Graphics Processing Unit is a processor set aside specifically for generating the graphical components of an operating system and interfacing with output devices such as a monitor or LCD screen. Currently, Intel produce the highest quantity of graphics chips as many motherboards include a chip with limited functionality and/or speed. Nvidia and ATI both produce high performance graphics chips. Nvidia and ATI both produce linux drivers however currently only nvidia provides a unified driver for all cards.
