Root directory

The root directory in Linux refers to the top-most directory, or the directory that contains all other directories. In some Linux distributions, the top-most directory can be seen in the file browser as the "File System" or may be displayed in other distributions as a red folder called "root."

The root directory contains all of the files for the operating system as well as all of the user file directories.
