smartd is a SMART Disk Monitoring Daemon that will monitor the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) facilities that are built into most recent harddisks (IDE, SATA, SCSI). SMART provides several parameters that indicate the reliability of the disk and tools for performing regular self-tests. The smartd daemon allows for access to SMART data.

smartd is controlled using smartctl.
