Speex is another audio codec for ogg designed especially for speech, and as such it's well suited to tasks like VoIP. This codec was not designed for music or other such audio types, so don't be disappointed if your songs sound bad if you try to convert them to the speex codec - use Vorbis for general audio or music.

For people trying to encode in speex, you should note that it was designed to handle 8, 16, and 32 Khz sample rates. It will still encode if it isn't one of those 3 rates though, however it might not be as efficient. sox can resample audio for you, or fix other things.

Installed programs

  • speexenc - encode wav/raw audio to the speex format
  • speecdec - play speex files
