A Virtual Memory Management Unit is the hardware part of using virtual memory on a computer. Hardware is necessary for virtual memory because if it were done only in software several cpu cycles would be used for each memory access.

Standard Linux requires a VMMU. All modern computers have a VMMU, except some small devices. uCLinux is embeded Linux for devices without a VMMU.
