The xlsfonts command lists all server fonts for X Windows. The fonts that are loaded when X starts depends on the FontPath settings in the files section in the X configuration file (eg. /etc/X11/xorg.conf). For example:
# xlsfonts | grep "gb"
Might return...
hanzigb24st
...indicating that a Japanese character-set is available.
