The "/etc/passwd" file in Linux is a text file that contains infomation on all system users. It typically shows file system permissions of each user, the user ID number and group ID number as well as the login directory and user default shell (terminal program).
Contrary to the belief of some, this file does not show user passwords in most systems. While the linked database does store user passwords, this text file will generally show an "x" in the place of the validation used to log a user in.
