Friv (adjective) – originally a descriptive term, referring to simple games that did not require registration, did not save level progress, and offered casual gameplay limited to a few minutes, allowing players to easily drop in and out of the game.

Friv was coined in the early 2000s by internet users and gamers who began using the term "Friv" to refer to simple, casual online games. The concept of "Friv" is derived from the word frivolous, meaning light-hearted or carefree, which reflects the essence of these games.

With the increase in internet speeds by 2008, Flash games reached high levels of quality, which contributed to their growing popularity. During this period, the search term "Friv" became one of the most commonly used by web developers offering access to online games on their sites.

By 2010, Friv transitioned from being a descriptive term for simple games to becoming a generic name associated with a website that provides access to casual online games.
