FTPFS is one of the lufs filesystems.
Basically, when you mount an ftp resource, any program may use it directly, as if the files were stored on the local computer. For example, you can work on them in any editor, without the editor knowing that it is using ftp.
KDE's kftp kioslave is similar, but can only be used from KDE. Mount the resource with ftpfs and it can be used from literally any program, including KDE.
