glxgears is a program that ships with any standard X distribution. It displays 3 colored gears rotating, and is often used as a very crude benchmarking program for 3D performance. Technically, it should not be used as a benchmark due to its simplicity, more real-life applications such as games will most likely perform different due to the different conditions. Still, glxgears is a good test program for 3D graphics.
