gv (for "ghostview") is the ideal X program for previewing .eps illustrations or .ps documents. In concordance to the Unix philosophy, gv does only one thing, but does it well. It renders a file for your screen and allows direct printing. That is about all it does, which keeps the application small and fast. If you want to do image conversions (as from .eps to .jpeg or anything else) use GIMP or convert.
