J2ME is the Java 2 SDK Mobile Edition, available from Sun for Java software developemnt on Mobile platforms. It was considered that the Standard Edition (J2SE) was too large for simple and limited mobile devices and so a smaller and more limited version was developed too.
J2ME, and a java machine to run software using it are both installed on most modern mobile phones and many PDAs. For more information see Sun's Page On J2ME.
Note, Sun's J2ME is not Free Software, but is freely downloadable. Portions of it are open source.
