Mke2fs is a command that creates an ext2 filesystem on (formats) a hard drive or hard drive partition. An ext2 filesystem is Linux native. When given a -j option, it creates an ext3 filesystem, which is the same as ext2, only with journaling capabilities. A related filesystem is Hans Reiser's Journaling Filesystem, or ReiserFS, which is optimized for small files.
