If, suddenly after restarting the computer, you do not get the usual beautiful window, but an ugly gray one, your login manager has changed from kdm to xdm. The login manager depends on the display manager. To replace the xdm login manager by kdm display manager, change the

DISPLAYMANAGER

entry in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and run SuSEConfig.
