Strictly speaking, an 'acronym' must form a pseudo-word like 'fubar' while 'cwd' is just an abbreviation. But that's probably being pedantic, huh? :) Even many dictionaries and grammars no longer draw the distinction. Digiot

AFAIK (;) an 'acronym' is an abbreviation made out of some initial letters of a multi-word name, not necessarily a 'pseudo-word' itself. So I think cwd is an acronym since it stands for a multi-word name. But yes, it's often confused and misused.
