Talk:Portability

Hi, if someone reads this article, he will come to the conclusion that this wiki is only a bad copy of wikipedia - wikipedia's article is better, it can contain pictures (which is not possible here) and limiting portability to an open-source-topic is nonsense. Instead of writing definitions in the style of "I think XXX means..." this wiki's articles should IMO focus on what this wiki can do best - provide Linux-specific but distro-independant real-world experiences, howtos, tutorials, guides, best practices and so. Because wikipedia states itself it is not a tutorial-collection this wiki can excel here! --ThorstenStaerk 22:26, November 8, 2008 (UTC)

I believe most articles on wikipedia are near worthless, being both hard to read, and containing little useful information, especially information useful to someone who is not involved in the given field. Take the portability article on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_portability. While being factually correct, its confusing with all the big words that people who are not familiar with might find confusing. While redoing wikipedia is a bad thing, overlinking to wikipedia could be worse. Regarding this page, I think the term comes up quite enough in many software project's descriptions that it might be best to keep a user-friendly page here, rather then outright replacing it with a potently confusing wikipedia link. I could not disagree more. wikipedia is excellent. I use it as an introduction to every new field where I work. What I admire most at wikipedia is: You can either have an advanced article or an article that is understandable for beginners. Only wikipedia has articles that are advanced and at the same time understandable. They do it by giving an overview on the topic before they go deeper.
