A thumbnail is simply an image that has been made smaller for the convenience of loading quicker. They are often used in an image gallery, where you have an index of images with say 20 small images, because it would be impractical to display 20 large images. You can make thumbnails with programs like imagemagick, the gimp or the php-gd library.
