xterm is the name of the X11 standard terminal emulator. It is the de facto method of getting an interface to the command line when using X.
xterm is not solely a simple interface with the command line - it is in fact a terminal emulator, emulating the standard DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014-compatible computer terminals.
