BitlBee is a chat network to IRC client proxy. It is not exactly a client application but more like a specialized IRC daemon (server). It is run on a machine and connected to with any IRC client just like connecting to any other IRC server. Once connected the user must authenticate with the bitlbee server. Interaction is essentially identical to using a normal IRC server. Chatting with other users is exactly the same as chatting with a normal IRC user. This method allows consolidation of all communication (IRC, AIM, Yahoo!, Jabber, etc) into one client, of your choice. It currently supports Yahoo!, AIM, Jabber, and MSN.
