Rhythmbox is an excellent music player for GNOME. It's great at handling playlists, and searching in them. There is also a feature for adaptive song ranking in development. It uses GStreamer or Xine for audio playback.

Whereas XMMS is a WinAmp 2x equivalent, Rythmbox is an iTunes or Windows Media Player equivalent.
