XMMS, which is an acronym for X MultiMedia System, is a media application primarily targeted at music playback. It was modeled after the program Winamp, a popular Windows media player. XMMS is not a port of Winamp, but rather was written from scratch by Mikael and Peter Alm. However, it does support Winamp 2.x skins.

XMMS can play media files in formats such as MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MOD, and WAV; others may be played with the use of input plugins.

Through third-party plugins some rudimentary video capabilities exist. However, there are much better systems other than XMMS for video support.
