Freedesktop.org is a project to improve the desktop use of Linux. It tries to do this by developing a shared platform (low level libs and standard specifications) for desktop environments and applications.

It hosts many subprojects, including:

  • DRI -- Linux 3D hardware acceleration support
  • Cairo -- Vector graphics library
  • D-BUS -- "message bus system", creates an easy way for applications to communicatie with each other.
  • Fontconfig -- font configuration library
  • Xorg -- The X server from X.org
